Canowindra Grossi fossil comes to life

The Canowindra Grossi fossil was discovered in 1955 during road works near the town of Canowindra, half an hour west of Orange in central west New South Wales.

It was a lobe-fined fish that had a fully developed nasal system and the find was significant; it was similar to other fossils found in the Northern Hemisphere but different enough to have been placed in its own family.

The Grossi is now being rediscovered by younger generations and visitors to Canowindra’s Age of Fishes Museum.

A digital animation has just been installed showing the fish as it would have looked 360 million years ago swimming through a Devonian billabong.
