About this objectPressed tin box, partially lined with timber (inside) and canvas covered lid. Originally used to house a WWII British Cased Lamp & Morse Code Key Unit. The lid is secured by a push button latch still in working order.
Three small oil burning lights each consisting of a light metal base (brass or tin) and white ceramic burner unit and a cotton wick. A small wheel connected to the ceramic head enables the wick to be raised and lowered.
The lights were commonly used for lighting before electricity became widespread - and in this context were likely used by the Italian Army before being 'captured' by the Australian forces in Egypt.

NX56443 Sergeant Albert EDGERTON was serving with the 9th Battery, 3rd Australian Anti-Tank Regiment when he was killed in action in Egypt on 25 October 1942 during the initial phase of the Second Battle of El Alamein (Operation LIGHTFOOT).
The Canowindra RSL sub-Branch holds Albert's WWII medals.
